Afrocentered Colors Series Collection
Afrocentered Colors Series Collection
Parades, kickbacks, grand openings, carnivals, protests, corners, blocks, ballrooms, and front stoops—Black life moves in color. The Afrocentered Color Series creates a richer, more authentic picture of Black and Black Queer life by documenting deeply cultural spaces through the lens of Color Theory. Each of the three volumes centers on a distinct color palette—Red, Orange, and Yellow; Green, Blue, and Purple; Grey, Brown, and Black—with sections built around words and emotions tied to those hues. From Caribbean festivals and cookouts to revolutionary protests and late-night gatherings, the photographs explore how color shapes memory, mood, and meaning within our communities.
Captured by Tyahra Angus—photographer and lover of anything Black and/or covered in chocolate—this series is a celebration of us taking ownership of our own stories. These pages invite you to look closer at my community, our shared spaces, and our living history, while leaving room for personal, color-based associations to form. At the end of the day, all we really have are our memories—and this work exists to honor, preserve, and reimagine them.
